1. We are heading out to Shelter Island this morning for our final seaside vacation of the summer. Even though the forecast is calling for record heat today, and there is unofficially one (and officially three) week(s) left of summer, I do feel like I’m slipping into Fall mode. (That might have something to do with all the fabulous Fall clothing I keep seeing at my favorite stores). Whatever the reason, I am sensing a transition from hot to cool.
And so this picture of my mother caught my eye. She is dressed in a swimsuit so clearly it’s warm where she is, but she is dipping her toe in snow that still sits on the ground. Her playful pose sums up what I’ve mentioned before: my mother  had a joie de vivre that was infectious. Unfortunately, as she became increasingly dissatisfied, and unhappy in her marriage to my father, she temporarily lost this zest for life. I’m not sure she ever fully got her groove back.
But this picture was snapped a dozen years before her melancholy would settle in. And here she is joyful, carefree, and most likely excited about all the opportunities at her finger—or perhaps toe—tips.
